Meet Sebastian Rodriguez
When students feel safe, they share in the most authentic way. In his own words, Sebastian a rising eighth grader, shared with Felicia Akaumoah, our Program Director, about his experience at Bridges:
Ms. Felicia: How did you feel about Bridges Afterschool when you first started?
Sebastian: I was nervous because I thought it was going to be just sitting down and doing my work with a person and being strict.
Ms. Felicia: What did you discover?
Sebastian: I could get up when I wanted or if I needed a break. The teachers are nice, and they help you. I like them.
Ms. Felicia: How are you liking your first year at summer camp?
Sebastian: At first, I was shy, and I thought I wasn't going to make friends, but I did. I like my new friends, and I know I'm probably only going to see them again if I come to camp again, so l am.
Ms. Felicia: What have you learned most this summer?
Sebastian: Ms. Rockett shows me math I've never seen before, and we get to figure it out even if it's hard. She is nice and helps us. We talk about growth-mindset, and I don't mind figuring out hard problems.
Ms. Felicia: Do you think this summer will impact your school year?
Sebastian: Yes. I can do hard math. I can figure it out if I work on it.
Ms. Felicia: Is there a difference between your regular school teachers and Bridges teachers?
Sebastian: Yes. They care about us and are nice to us when they teach. I like them.
Parent Review
"I am so grateful that Bridges has year round tutoring and summer camp is available to my boys. It was like a foreign language to us all, I am no help to them. Their school work and homework has improved tremendously. You know that saying "it takes a village", well bridges is our village. Bridges is the Rosetta Stone, babble, and Duolingo, of homework."
